Backstory

Odwofi was once an NPC, during much simpler times. The outside of the bar he lived in was little more than a shrouded mist of nothing with a road passing before it, but that didn't matter. He never left, he never needed to. He needed nothing, and therefore everything he needed was already there.

Occasionally a Player would show up, they always did. Many types, some more than once, but all the same in their goals; Either to sell something, or picking up the quest to save the world.... well, that was the last one in the line, there were other lesser quests, few heroes he met were ever ready to take on the end on the first visit.

There was a certain power in the air, a certain urgency, whenever a hero was ready, whenever one was about to show up for the final quest. With exception to a few occasions, events unfolded pretty much the same; The bell tolled in the distance, thunderstorms began appearing in the 'nothing', and powerful artefacts were shoved into his hands in exchange for the gold he always seemed to have just enough of.

Then, soon after they leave, everything was back to normal. Everyone was back like they never left when things got dark.

He knew all the spells they'd need to look out for, all the defenses of the castle, every monster and mercenary that would get sent at the Player, and exactly how to get there, without having to set foot outside his little tavern corner.

But they were late....

The bell had tolled...

The storms rolled in...

Cracks of black lightning had forced him from his corner, the world was rending itself apart in blurred squares and static lines, and most worryingly they hadn't come to sell anything at all.

They weren't coming... All the signs he knew had happened, and a few new ones he never saw before. Someone must be the hero, someone must save the day, someone must take the quest.

And that's when the quest giver, gave himself a quest.
