=== Appearance ===

Barely scraping 4'8", Nemmea's height, petite build, and youthful facial features can, at first glance, give those around her the impression that she is younger than she actually is. This isn't helped at all by the often childish mannerisms she affects without an apparent ounce of self-consciousness about it. Her glossy black hair is usually put up in any number of hairstyles -- whatever suits her whim at the time -- with some of it sometimes left to frame her face. She tends be wearing a collection of hair clips and barrettes in bright colors at any given time, varying from simple, functional designs to cute motifs like simplified animal faces and occasionally a skull or two.

Beyond that her outfits always seem to have a certain amount of chaotic but deliberate care put into them, as well. She especially favors pastel goth styles, and can frequently be seen in something standard for the trend -- striped arm warmers, big goth stompers, plaid skirts and fishnet stockings seem to take up a significant amount of her wardrobe. If someone were able to look past the flashy ensemble and the doll-like makeup that almost seem to deliberately draw attention away from it, they might pick up on the fact that there is a slight pallor to her skin and a sense of frailty in her body that make her look a little less than healthy.

==Credit for Roleplaying on the Cleft==

You can earn Tokens of Restringing and even Immortal Tokens by being active in the roleplaying community on the Cleft of Dimensions! Here's how it works:

All Roleplaying sessions will be given equal credit. It doesn't matter you're in a longstanding plot, doing a one-on-one session, or just free- forming. I reserve to right to give additional credit to outstanding RP sessions, however, on a case by case basis. Plot leaders/hosters will also be given additional initiative-taking bonuses, to be determined by me over the time that said plot remains in play.

All RP logs sent to me (via email) will qualify as a 3/2 method of token acquisition. This means that a player will receive 2 restring Tokens for every 3 logs that are sent my way.

World Notes are worth 1 Restring Token for every 2 notes that are written. These world notes are required to be decently-written, however; while I understand that not everyone is a novelist, slapping down a quick paragraph-and-a-half about incredibly-vague do-nothings will not earn you anything.

Immortal Token credits are acquired as follows:
-15 Immortal Token 'Credits' required to earn 1 Immortal Token.
-2 World Notes will earn 1 Immortal Token Credit.
-1 RP Log will earn 1 Immortal Token Credit.

Most of the bulk of Kaira's body resembles a monstrous spider, one that bears the torso, arms and head of a humanoid woman where an arachnid's mouthparts would normally be found. Her spiny arachnoid abdomen makes up the bulk of her mass, and is amber yellow nearest to where it connects to her modified cephalothorax, but shifts to a pale yellowy white further back. Mottled black markings cover much of it, until the bases of ten distinct spines extending upward and out are reached. These spines are orange-red in color and tipped with a brown so dark it looks almost black. The foremost, spidery parts of her body are umber brown, with six massive legs attached below the human torso. Her perceived height depends greatly on how her legs are positioned, but the spider portion alone typically reaches a bit over five feet tall, meaning that her head tends to tower over the average person.

Kaira's willowy upper half has the lightly tanned complexion of someone with fairer skin who spends a decent amount of time under the sun. For modesty's sake, she wears a fastened vest over her upper body that has patches of inconsistent coloration, suggesting that it may have been mended by hand more than once. Her face is all but never seen without a wooden mask that has holes carved out for her eyes and bears no other decorative or functional details. A couple of bristly inhuman appendages extend from either side of her head -- resembling a spider's pedipalps most closely. Her black hair falls as far as her lower back and is normally styled in twin braids to keep it out of the way, though her activities and lifestyle keep it from ever looking entirely neat.

Standing at 6'3" when he straightens up fully, the man here somehow still utterly fails to possess any sort of an air of intimidation, probably because he can only be said to have, most charitably, a slightly chubby scholar's build, and he has a bit of a tendency to slouch, along with some timid mannerisms. He's a bit young, perhaps in his mid-twenties, light-skinned with some premature graying in his mouse-brown hair. His facial features would probably be forgettable to anyone used to seeing humans were it not for the large birthmark across the left side of his face, and the partial heterochromia; his eyes are predominately brown but the bottom section of his left iris has a crescent of blue cut out of it. His style of dress leans almost exclusively towards comfort and practicality, with a tendency towards earthy tones.

A priestess who currently resides at [[Orbonne Monastery]]. She has had somewhat of a refined upbringing, and is often seen with her companion, Peaches, an Amaro (a creature somewhere between a chocobo and a dragon) who has the ability to speak.

Dain is a fair-skinned woman in her late twenties, standing at about 5'2". The feature most likely to draw attention first is her hair, which is a deep carmine red, falls to her mid-back when let down, and is clearly well cared-for. She could be mistaken for human only at a distance. A closer glance reveals that her ears are finned and covered in soft, thin scales. Starting on her cheeks and trailing further back towards the base of her neck, her skin is covered in thicker scales that are a rich golden orange in color. Her eyes are an intense yellow, and the pupils are vertical slits, somewhat reminiscent of a viper's. In spite of this, she has a general presence of approachability, nearly always coming across as friendly and open.

Her typical style of dress is both comfortable and cute with a strong lean towards femininity. She can usually be seen in dresses that fall to or just a bit above the knee, or blouses and skirts of a similar length, and often floral patterns in gentle or bright colors. Her shoes are usually not anything more flashy than a cute set of flats or a kitten heel. Whatever she's wearing, though she does tend towards being somewhat modest, it is evident that her build is somewhat heavyset and curvy.

The woman's usually-manicured hands have sturdy nails that come to a very slight point, and similar scales to the ones on her face can also be spotted on her upper arms, when visible. An observant person could probably guess that the scales grow thicker and cover more of her skin the nearer they are to her spine.

Dr. Alphys, though she usually drops the title, is one scientist among many living in Shrike. Though she largely has the habits of a hermit and is rarely if ever seen in public, she has nonetheless earned a local reputation as a problem-solver and troubleshooter with a decent array of talents, for those willing to overlook her eccentricities. Her main areas of interest are robotics, tinkering with personal devices like phones, and abnormal biology; she has a good understanding of creatures with a close connection to Mana or magic, in particular, being one herself. Still, her abilities with both magic and technology and her inquisitive mind give her a good capacity for finding solutions, sometimes even for things outside her area of expertise.

==Premise==

Hikari no Matsuri (Japanese: "Festival of Lights") is a winter-themed, weeklong event that is held either at the end of every year or the very beginning of the following year, and is designed to be a large-scale entertainment venue filled with games, attractions, vendors, and other involvement vectors. Most everything about the festival is automated, allowing players to come and go as they see fit, and there are a variety of themes and difficulties (with appropriate rewards) from casual to heavily-vested. Unspoken secrets also await players to find and discover for themselves, as well as a small-scale storyline each year further detailing some of the returning characters' backstories and their relevance to the festival itself. 'Hikari no Matsuri' and 'Festival of Lights' are used interchangeably as direct references, and it is style heavily in the overall theme of Japanese-style festivals, with some obvious twists and differences to keep it original. The Festival of Lights typically runs for a full week, opening in the morning and running until the gates are closed at midnight, Eastern Standard Time. Players utilize a wristband while traversing and engaging with the festival and its attractions/occupants, which helps keep track of certain progressions and, in some years, depicts them as a member of a specific team for competitive games. During the time spent there, players can accumulate currency, typically in the form of different types of 'Jingle Bells,' which are then exchange for a large variety of prizes, many of which cannot be obtained anywhere else. Each year expands upon the pre-existing festival, and new attractions, characters, rewards, and other things are inclined to show up with each new instance that follows. Occasional game-staff-hosted events are also known to take place during the week, sometimes predetermined and sometimes spontaneous.

'Kindness and Generosity' tends to be the running theme throughout Hikari no Matsuri from year to year, with players finding themselves in more-gracious favor from various NPCs as a result of actions they take in this direction, but certain things, while limited in scope, are also available to those players who decide to be the opposite.

==Story & History==

In 343, [[Kouchi Fukawa]] of [[Fukawa Industries]] had a winter-themed festival boardwalk constructed as a northwestern extension of the city of [[Viorar]], citing his desire for a place that hard-working people and their families could go for a week at the end of the year to unwind and relax from the toil and turmoil that the year's efforts induced. The construction, and subsequent upkeep of the festival, was funding wholly out-of-pocket; this turned out to be a gambit on the part of Fukawa Industries, as Kouichi saw it as a move to try and garner trust from external companies and agencies who might commit themselves to the company and its vision, and provide commensurate business ventures. It turned to be a massive success over the years that followed, turning Fukawa Industries into a corporate powerhouse with many allies around the business world outside the festival itself.

A bit deeper than that, though, was the fact that Kouichi's only daughter, [[Hikari_Fukawa|Hikari]], had fallen gravely ill that year and was not expected to survive her illness. Faced with the inevitable, and as a means of coping with the apparent loss of his child, Kouichi fashioned the Festival of Lights as a 'memorial' of sorts and gave it her namesake accordingly, citing his desire to bring the same happiness to people all over the Cleft that his daughter had brought him and his wife, [[Kaede_Fukawa|Kaede]]. Miraculously, Hikari actually did not pass away and instead made a full recovery, eventually becoming the festival's mascot in 347 when her presence and story was made known.

In 349, it was determined that Hikari no Matsuri's growth (and plans for continued growth beyond) had exceeded what Viorar was capable of hosting. Kouichi would opt to then make Hikari no Matsuri an independent entertainment source at that point, finding a new home near [[Todo]], nestled deep within the [[Frosty Forest]].

In 353, construction began on a new amusement park named 'Fun City,' under the leadership of [[Randal Simmons]], CEO of Intention Industries. Though not meant as such, both he and Kouichi realized the competitive ramifications of having such a large-scale entertainment avenue against the already-well-established Hikari no Matsuri. Rather than slug it out through business practices, the two came to a merger agreement and began implementing some of Fun City's ideas into the Festival of Lights' future construction scope. This event brought Randal's daughter, [[Persephone_Simmons|Persephone]] into the picture, and she began (begrudgingly) attending the Festival of Lights each subsequent year that followed. In this same year, a shrine of sorts was erected in a cave a short distance to the north to pay homage to the spirits of Hikari no Matsuri and as thanks for their watchful eyes over the festival and its inhabitants. Some people have stated that, at certain times during the week, a representative of these spirits will reveal herself and grant a wish to any individual who happens upon her during this limited appearance.

In 355, Kaede also fell ill with the same strange sickness that had plagued her daughter over a decade prior, and it also seemed as though recovery was not possible. However, with help from Persephone and a childhood friend of Hikari's, travelers to the Festival of Lights that year were able to piece together an alchemical process and created a unique plant that was stated to provide miracle cures to otherwise-incurable illnesses. Leaving this plant with Kaede in her home, she did indeed make a full recovery, and would show up, herself, at the Festival of Lights on the following year.

Hikari no Matsuri has grown substantially since its inception, and no small amount of whispers speak of those spirits that reside within the festival grounds, watching over the people who invest their time there and providing occasional 'miracles' to people with good hearts and strong wills who fall upon hard times or harsh circumstances. Rumors speak of Hikari's original resuscitation as one such miracle, as well as the presence of those travelers who happened to be able to save Kaede in the year that she fell ill, as well.

The Festival of Lights remains a eagerly-anticipated event each and every year, both from the people who look forward to it throughout the year and also from the Fukawa family itself.

She could be mistaken for human only at a distance. A closer glance reveals that her ears are finned and covered in soft, thin scales. Starting on her cheeks and trailing further back towards the base of her neck, her skin is covered in thicker scales that are a rich golden orange in color. Her eyes are an intense yellow, and the pupils are vertical slits, somewhat reminiscent of a viper's. In spite of this, she has a general presence of approachability, nearly always coming across as friendly and open.

Her typical style of dress is both comfortable and cute with a strong lean towards femininity. A priestess who currently resides at [[Orbonne Monastery]]. She has had somewhat of a refined upbringing, and is often seen with her companion, Peaches, an Amaro (a creature somewhere between a chocobo and a dragon) who has the ability to speak.

= Description =

Dain is a fair-skinned woman in her late twenties, standing at about 5'2". The feature most likely to draw attention first is her hair, which is a deep carmine red, falls to her mid-back when let down, and is clearly well cared-for. She could be mistaken for human only at a distance. A closer glance reveals that her ears are finned and covered in soft, thin scales. Starting on her cheeks and trailing further back towards the base of her neck, her skin is covered in thicker scales that are a rich golden orange in color. Her eyes are an intense yellow, and the pupils are vertical slits, somewhat reminiscent of a viper's. In spite of this, she has a general presence of approachability, nearly always coming across as friendly and open.

Her typical style of dress is both comfortable and cute with a strong lean towards femininity. She can usually be seen in dresses that fall to or just a bit above the knee, or blouses and skirts of a similar length, and often floral patterns in gentle or bright colors. Her shoes are usually not anything more flashy than a cute set of flats or a kitten heel. Whatever she's wearing, though she does tend towards being somewhat modest, it is evident that her build is somewhat heavyset and curvy.

The woman's usually-manicured hands have sturdy nails that come to a very slight point, and similar scales to the ones on her face can also be spotted on her upper arms, when visible. An observant person could probably guess that the scales grow thicker and cover more of her skin the nearer they are to her spine.

The main goal of the Cleft of Dimensions is, very simply, to kill monsters to gain levels. This is facilitated by gaining 'experience points' or XPs. After gaining 2000 of them, your character gains a level.

==Inventory Management==
Eventually you'll acquire enough items that dealing with your inventory screen may become a bit of a hassle. You may find yourself with a collection of water bottles, or more rabite meat than you can shake a stick at. Thankfully, there's a few things you can do to help mitigate this beyond simply dropping or selling your excess items.

*A few stores scattered throughout the Cleft sell various containers, often a bag or backpack of some variety, sometimes other things. You might even find a few pieces of loot that can server as containers in a pinch. In their most basic form they will simply serve as a way to organize your inventory (putting all your food or lights in a backpack, for instance). Several containers will actually lessen the weight of the items contained within, so it's always worth keeping an eye out!
*Containers can also be used to create a locker at certain locations, such as the [[Truce]] and [[Viorar]] banks. A locker will have the same capacity as the container used to make it and you can upgrade your locker from a better container anytime. Just make sure you don't lockercreate <container> with a container you want to keep, because you'll lose it for good.
*Have you decided to buy a second water bottle for those long trips away from town, and having trouble using it? The game will understand such commands as "fill second water bottle" or "eat fifth apple".

There are four different types of armor score: bash, slash, pierce, and exotic aka magic. The exotic type of armor score protects against melee attacks of unusual damage type, such as 'flame', 'laser', 'vines', etc. Armor score doesn't protect against damage from actual spells regardless of their damage type.

Low numbers are more beneficial for armor scores. When a spell's affect reads something like 'affects armor class by -15', this is a bonus. Positive numbers are armor penalties. (The 'saves' stat works similarly.) On the other hand, when looking at an armor and seeing "Armor class is 5 pierce, 6 bash, 5 slash, and 6 vs. magic.", positive numbers in this category mean better armor.

Any changes to your armor score, whether from spells or items, will change the readout on 'score' or 'report defense' immediately, so you can always know what your armor scores actually do.

==Inventory Management==
Eventually you'll acquire enough items that dealing with your inventory screen may become a bit of a hassle. You may find yourself with a collection of water bottles, or more rabite meat than you can shake a stick at. Thankfully, there's a few things you can do to help mitigate this beyond simply dropping or selling your excess items.

*A few stores scattered throughout the Cleft sell various containers, often a bag or backpack of some variety, sometimes other things. You might even find a few pieces of loot that can server as containers in a pinch. In their most basic form they will simply serve as a way to organize your inventory (putting all your food or lights in a backpack, for instance). Several containers will actually lessen the weight of the items contained within, so it's always worth keeping an eye out!
*Containers can also be used to create a locker at certain locations, such as the [[Truce]] and [[Viorar]] banks. A locker will have the same capacity as the container used to make it and you can upgrade your locker from a better container anytime. Just make sure you don't lockercreate <container> with a container you want to keep, because you'll lose it for good.
*Have you decided to buy a second water bottle for those long trips away from town, and having trouble using it? The game will understand such commands as "fill second water bottle" or "eat fifth apple".

Auburn (likely dyed), shaggy hair reaches to their shoulders, 'messy' but in the intentional sense of someone who clearly takes great care to have it fall exactly the right way.

Their deep tan skin is decorated with a scattering of freckles across their nose and cheeks, and pale green eyes with lovely thick lashes scrutinize their surroundings from behind the fringe that has a frequent tendency to fall into their face. The boyish features make it a bit hard to put a finger on their exact age, but they may be around twenty, give or take a couple years.

The void; always such a strange place to end up. When I'm here, I see
glimpses of other places, other people, and other times. Sometimes it's
more than a glimpse, enough to become real, it's one of the ways I travel
about. I come and go at the whims of chance; the threads of space and time
don't hold onto me quite as well as they do others, I slide across them like
a boat on water.

Yet I always seem to find myself drawn back here, to this little town...
This strange little town. Here in the void, it hovers at the edge of my
peripheral vision, just waiting for me to reach out for it. A nice
distraction for when I become bored of the real/unreal picture show in front
of me.

The most interesting thing honestly isn't the location. As quaint as it
is, it has hardly changed in all the times I've been here... But the
people. Oh the people! Such rich diversity! Koopas, Hylians, creatures
without form, Reploids, my friends. Never do I lack happiness when I find
myself in a time with them.

Of course, it never lasts. No matter where I go, it never lasts. I find
myself elsewhere, or back here in the void... It's not so bad here I
suppose; I don't often find myself hungry, nor have I aged that much. But
everything about reality; the feel of it, the tastes, the smells, the
beautiful sounds, everything but the sight of it is denied me...

The Truce Militia is more along the lines of a lightly equipped standing army, tasking itself with the defense of Truce and it's nearby lands. Recently, they've begun construction of a fort in the Sulfataska pass to the south of Truce, in an attempt to help secure the nearby farmlands and create a chokepoint. The Militia is currently several hundred strong, but manages to squeak by with a rather small command staff, all close friends of each other.

The main goal of the Cleft of Dimensions is, very simply, to kill monsters to gain levels. This is facilitated by gaining 'experience points' or XPs. After gaining 2000 of them, your character gains a level.

As you gain levels, your character becomes stronger and thus monsters become easier to kill. The easier a monster is, the less XP you gain upon killing it. To counteract this, you need to seek out and kill progressively bigger and nastier monsters.

Gaining a level also allows you to:
* Use better weapons, armor, and other gear, which enhances your combat abilities AND
* Learn new skills and spells, which equally enhance your combat abilities

To sum up, you need to gain levels in order to use better items, and get new abilities, which both let you kill more monsters to gain even more levels.

=Newbie Bonuses=
One important thing to remember as a newbie is that at very low levels, there are drastically reduced penalties for [[dying]]. This serves as an incentive to wander outside of safe zones and explore or experiment, with no risk of losing valuable items.
* At levels 11 through 15, necromancer NPCs will recover your [[corpse]] for free.
* Below level 11, characters don't even leave a corpse when dying. This means that all your equipment and inventory stays in place while you are moved to your recall point.

Characters at level 15 or below can also use the "Recall" command at any time, teleporting them back to town. You can even recall from combat, although this incurs a 25 XP point penalty. Above level 15, you will need to buy scrolls of recall or use similar items to recall.

Characters below level 10 receive an additional 20% XP per kill, and characters below level 5 receive 40% extra per kill! These bonuses won't allow you to break the 200 per kill barrier, however.

=Newbie Areas=
Monsters in newbie zones aren't aggressive, and will passively wait around for you to kill them. This makes them among the safest areas to explore. Until very high levels, aggressive monsters remain uncommon, but it's still a good idea to develop a sense of caution as you gain levels, and "consider" unfamiliar monsters before attacking.

Most areas (excluding interior dungeon-like areas) have a map that is accessible via the "map" command. These maps generally don't show you a room-by-room breakdown, but instead give you a general idea of the layout of the area. Towns will usually have shops and other points of interest marked for you already. In addition to the map, you can also get a much broader regional view via the "atlas" command. Both of these commands in tandem can make finding your way around the Cleft much easier.

* Truce's newbie areas are [[Truce Canyon]] to the north, [[Guardia Fields]] to the south, and [[Rabite Forest]] to the west (and slightly north).
** Be aware that heading straight west from Truce will put you near slightly more difficult areas like [[Booster Tower]] and [[Rocket Town]]. Nothing is dangerously aggressive, but reckless adventurers can easily bite off more than they can chew.

* Viorar's newbie areas are [[Zigolis Swamp]] to the north, [[Luon Highway]] to the south, and [[Douglas Island]] via ferry.
** Viorar's ferry dock is on the west side of town, and the ticket to Douglas Island costs a mere 1 silver coin.
** While [[Bequerel Mine]] doesn't have any aggressive monsters, it is a level 11-15 area and is easy to accidentally wander into, just outside Viorar's east gate.

Unsure what zone or area you should be exploring at your level? The "area" command will display a list of zones that are roughly within a small range of your level("area all" will show you the list of every area in the game). Not every area will display on the map or atlas, and may require some off-the-path exploring!

== Picking a Starting Town ==
There are some things to consider when picking a starting town

*Easy Mode - Truce
**Truce is a more compact town, and is the center of a populated region of the Cleft.
**The nearby towns are easier to find.
**For beginners, Truce may have more helpful NPCs nearby.
**There are also a few newbie-focused intro quests in Truce.

*Medium Mode - Viorar
**Viorar is in an isolated area of the Cleft, the closest town is pretty far away.
**North of Viorar is a region covered in eternal night, so you will need more light-type objects.
**Viorar lacks intro quests, and assumes you have a general idea how to conduct yourself in MUDs.
**Some Viorar shops close at certain hours.

If you don't like where you started, you may head 'up' from the fountain room to return to the tutorial area, and pick another town. Once you reach level 6, it will be impossible to do.

=Basic Shopping Skills=
Although you will commonly receive pieces of new equipment by killing monsters, you will still need to buy things from shops to ensure that your weapons and armor stay up-to-date as you gain levels. Equipment never wears out from using it, so there's no need to waste money until you find an actual upgrade.

'''Try Before You Buy''': Typing 'info item' while in a shop will identify the chosen item out of the shopkeeper's inventory. This is a free service, and is useful for comparing a new item to what you already have.

'''Sell Your Old Junk''': Typing 'info' alone in a shop will allow you to see what types of items they are willing to buy. Find a shop that buys weapons and/or armor to sell back equipment you don't need anymore.

'''Buying In Bulk''': To buy an item in bulk, simply enter the command 'buy #*item.' For example, buy 5*sword will buy you five swords, as long as you have enough money to buy the desired quantity of said item. To buy one at a time, simply type 'buy item'.

=Equipment for Lowbies=

When creating a character, you start out with a basic weapon and some flimsy armor. These will serve you well for several levels while you learn the ropes.

==Weapons==
Newbie weapons are granted to your character as soon as you make them, dependent on what weapon type(s) you chose during character creation. For their level, they are quite good. You won't really need to even consider upgrading until about level five.

* Level 5 weapon shops exist in [[Crysta]] (for players starting in [[Truce]]) and [[Monstro Town]] (for players starting in [[Viorar]]).
* Level 10 weapon shops can be found in [[Rocket Town]] (near Truce) and in Viorar.
* Low-level weapons of various types can be found in newbie areas as drops from monsters or rewards from minor quests, too.

Remember that attacking while unarmed will generally do very poor damage at any level. Despite this, it is possible for a high-level character to do more damage unarmed than with a very low-level weapon, so upgrading your weapon as you level up is almost mandatory.

==Armors==
Even low level armor will improve your damage reduction. Because the damage numbers at low levels are commonly in the single digits however, you may not even notice a difference! Extra equipment will help you feel less naked at the very least, though.
* Level zero armor can be purchased in [[Truce]], and level five armor is available in [[Viorar]] and [[Crysta]].
* Level 10 armor shops can be found in [[Truce]] and [[Viorar]] also.
* Assorted pieces of low-level armor can be found as monster drops or scattered in various other shops, too.

Damage reduction from armor only lessens damage from normal melee attacks. Monsters using spells or other special skills to attack will ignore it. Most monsters, especially low-level ones, don't do this, so armor is an important stat at any level. Good armor can't do any better than half incoming damage. Very poor armor can cause you to take up to double damage!

The amount of damage reduction gained from a certain armor score is dependent on the wearer's level. This makes it mandatory to upgrade your armor as you level up, or you will actually take more damage from attacks. However, even armor items very far below your level will slightly improve your armor stats, so it is almost never a good idea to go naked.

===The Armor Stat===
'''Armor scores''' are stats that reduce damage from melee attacks, but their calculations and the way bonuses are applied can be misleading.

There are four different types of armor score: bash, slash, pierce, and exotic aka magic. The exotic type of armor score protects against melee attacks of unusual damage type, such as 'flame', 'laser', 'vines', etc. Armor score doesn't protect against damage from actual spells regardless of their damage type.

Low numbers are more beneficial for armor scores. When a spell's affect reads something like 'affects armor class by -15', this is a bonus. Positive numbers are armor penalties. (The 'saves' stat works similarly.) On the other hand, when looking at an armor and seeing "Armor class is 5 pierce, 6 bash, 5 slash, and 6 vs. magic.", positive numbers in this category mean better armor.

Any changes to your armor score, whether from spells or items, will change the readout on 'score' or 'report defense' immediately, so you can always know what your armor scores actually do.

==Inventory Management==
Eventually you'll acquire enough items that dealing with your inventory screen may become a bit of a hassle. You may find yourself with a collection of water bottles, or more rabite meat than you can shake a stick at. Thankfully, there's a few things you can do to help mitigate this beyond simply dropping or selling your excess items.

*A few stores scattered throughout the Cleft sell various containers, often a bag or backpack of some variety, sometimes other things. You might even find a few pieces of loot that can server as containers in a pinch. In their most basic form they will simply serve as a way to organize your inventory (putting all your food or lights in a backpack, for instance). Several containers will actually lessen the weight of the items contained within, so it's always worth keeping an eye out!
*Containers can also be used to create a locker at certain locations, such as the [[Truce]] and [[Viorar]] banks. A locker will have the same capacity as the container used to make it and you can upgrade your locker from a better container anytime. Just make sure you don't lockercreate <container> with a container you want to keep, because you'll lose it for good.
*Have you decided to buy a second water bottle for those long trips away from town, and having trouble using it? The game will understand such commands as "fill second water bottle" or "eat fifth apple".
